Global Education and Standards

What's Global About the Common Core Standards by Margaret Reed Miller

A great article that connects the CCLS to global competence.  As the introduction to the English language arts Standards notes, “by emphasizing required achievements, the Standards leave room for teachers, curriculum developers, and states to determine how those goals should be reached and what additional topics should be addressed.”

Connections to ISTE Technology Standards

There is a direct connection between global education and two of the ISTE (International Society of Technology in Education) Standards, and indirect connections with several of the other standards.

Standard 2: Digital Citizen

Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.

Standard 7: Digital Collaborator

Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.

Globalizing Standards & Potential Lesson Modifications

Standard 1: Using Inquiry to build understanding and create new knowledge.
An independent learner asks authentic questions and accesses, evaluates and uses information effectively to develop new understandings.

Standards for the 21st Century Learner

Global education can be integrated into this standard when students investigate the world through books, websites, databases and with communication with others.  This can be done through the sharing and reading of multi-cultural texts from various genres, and with multiple viewpoints and perspectives.  This can also be done by encouraging teachers to incorporate global issues and culture into their research projects, as well as connecting them to students, adults and classrooms representing other cultures.

I can make a lesson plan modification that demonstrates the global competencies of investigating the world with a 5th grade unit that focuses on the book “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Munoz Ryan.  I discovered a website recently,  http://www.googlelittrips.com , that has “literature trips” for a variety of books, including Esperanza Rising, that uses Google Earth to pin places of importance within the book.  As they progress through the book, students follow the “lit trip” using Google Earth.

To demonstrate their learning, students can create their own lit trip using a novel that takes place in another geographic region.  These can be embedded on my website, for other students to explore.

Standard 3: Demonstrating Social Responsibility
An independent learner contributes to the learning community by seeking multiple perspectives, sharing his or her understandings with others, and using information and resources ethically.

Standards for the 21st Century Learner

Global education can be integrated into this standard when students recognize their own and others’ perspectives, and communicate their ideas effectively with diverse audiences. They can listen to and read multi-cultural texts from various genres, and compare online resources (ie Today’s Front Pages from the Newseum website) to seek global perspectives.

A lesson plan modification that demonstrates the global competency of recognizing perspectives is having students participate in the Great Global Read Aloud (www.theglobalreadaloud.com) The website has instructions for connecting with classrooms around the globe as well as related activties.   To demonstrate their learning, students from both schools could contribute to a voicethread (www.voicethread.com), posting thoughts on the book, and responding to others’ thoughts.
